Bulk, Linear DC Power Supplies
Teknic offers two models of 75 volt DC power supplies designed to work well with the high peak current required in most motion control applications. They feature high output capacitance for “stiff” supply of bus power, multiple input taps for a variety of AC line voltages, fuse protection, and no switching noise. These products supply clean power at low costto up to eight DC motor drives (depending on model and application).

Amazon™ Intelligent Power Centers
For years, on lower power motor drives, astute OEM machine designers have used DC power supplies to power groups of motor drives rather than using AC-input drives where each drive needs to be individually connected directly to the AC line. This is because AC-input drives squeeze AC rectification and filtering circuitry into every drive, creating several problems for the designer:

1) motor drives are more expensive; 2) fusing and wiring is more complicated, leading to higher installed cost and more errors; 3) overall parts count is increased leading to lower reliability due to higher complexity and internal operating temperatures in each drive; and 4) lack of load balancing between axes requires more total power supply capacity and regen circuit capacity.

Now the Amazon Intelligent Power Center (“Amazon IPC”) is available to provide intelligent DC power to high power drives that have DC input capability, such as Teknic’s Eclipse and Meridian 6- and 7-series drives.

So, with the Amazon IPC, you can have the benefits of centralized power even with those higher power motor drives. And as you may have gathered from the name “Intelligent Power Center”, the Amazon is more than just a power supply. Every Amazon is controlled by a dedicated DSP and innovative firmware, and includes such features as:

  • Control of the AC input contactor to easily control power to all drives
  • Control and dissipation of regenerated energy
  • Over-voltage detection/protection
  • Over-current detection/protection
  • Soft-start, in-rush current limiting to prevent accidental circuit breaker trips upon machine power up
  • Reversed-polarity protection which prevents the catastrophic effects of accidentally reversing polarity on a drive’s input power wiring
  • Diagnostic indication of a variety of error conditions for easier machine debugging and reduced downtime
  • Brown-out detection
  • Voltage droop detection
  • Lost AC input phase detection
  • Automatic bus power dump
  • Three AC line options
    • Single-phase, 100-250VAC
    • Three-phase, 100-250VAC
    • 5-wire (380-415VAC) three-phase

As a low-cost option (about $48), the Amazon can be configured with extra, built-in EMI filtering. Then instead of spending about $200 on a bulky, external, three-phase EMI filter to meet CE and UL machinery requirements, you can get a small, low-cost filter for about $50. You’ll save about a hundred dollars and a large amount of panel space, too.

The Amazon IPC is a complete power solution. It provides high-quality DC power, eliminates expensive, bulky transformers, and provides the power management structure that you, as a machine builder, would otherwise have to design, build, and install yourself. What’s more, the Amazon IPC provides these features in a compact, well engineered unit for about the same cost as the pile of parts it replaces.
